Practice
Ron Heilmann is Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working out of his private office in Syracuse since 1981. He is a Family and Divorce Mediator accredited by the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation and has been the Director of the Mediation Network of Syracuse, mediating divorces since 1983. Facilitating amicable divorces (more than 800) through his organization Ron now brings his extensive experience to assisting couples and collaborating lawyers as an allied professional of the CNY Collaborative Family Law Professionals. Ron’s entire career has been working with family members (one way or another) and their professionals negotiating the difficult transitions caused by separation and/or divorce. His focus has always been on preserving the integrity of the family.
Professional and Community Activities
Ron has been a founding member and Past President of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation. He has been a Board Member of the Mental Health Association of Onondaga County. He has been co-founder and Coordinator for the Children 1st Program, a parent education program for separating parents that has given vital information to more than 4,000 parents in the Central New York area. For four years he ran a group for teenagers of the One Parent Family Council. For eleven years he facilitated the first support group for the separated and divorced in Syracuse, “Courage To Be.” For nearly twenty five years he worked part time as the medical social worker for the Spinal Bifida Clinic at Crouse Hospital and Upstate Medical University Hospital. Ron is Vice President of the Healthy Coalition of Central New York, a non-profit advocacy organization and clearing house for providing information on healthy marriages. Ron has been a guest lecturer at Syracuse University teaching a seminar on Divorce and Family Mediation and given numerous presentations to this community on matters relating to healthy marriages and healthy divorces.
Publications
Ron has co-authored a book with Mary Ann Massey, Ed. D. of Williamsburg, Virginia: LOVEWORKS: Coming to Terms with Intimacy and Equality which looks at the struggles of contemporary men and women trying to negotiate and maintain a mutually rewarding intimate relationship. He was published in the Family and Conciliation Courts Review, Volumn 38, No. 4, in October 2000, pp 514-524, “A Community-Based Parent Education Program for Separating Parents.”
Education and Memberships
Ron received his Masters Degree in Social Work from Indiana University in 1970. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Academy of Clinical Social Worker, the Society for Clinical Social Work Psychotherapists, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, The Association for Conflict Resolution, and the NYS Council on Divorce Mediation.
